Portland Downs Gonzaga 12-7 in Pepsi Johnny Quik Tournament

FRESNO, Calif. -- Portland, coming off a 3-2 victory over Fresno State Tuesday night, continued to play well on the third day of the 30th annual Pepsi Johnny Quik Tournament in Fresno, Calif. Gonzaga entered today's tournament as the only undefeated team with a 2-0 record. The pilots scored five runs in the fourth inning. Riley Henricks had a two run homerun in the inning. Portland added another three runs in the fifth inning that extended their lead 10-1. Brennan Thorpe pitched seven strong innings allowing only five hits and one earned run. Gonzaga cut into the lead in the bottom of the eight inning by scoring five runs. The big blow was a bases clearing double by Anthony Synegal that cut the lead to 12-6. In the ninth inning, Gonzaga added one more run on a passed ball scoring Brett Nicholas from third pushing the score to 12-7 and to a win by Portland, ending Gonzaga's undefeated record in this tournament. Portland will play New Mexico State at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 13, 2007 at 10 a.m. Gonzaga will face Fresno State at 6:05 p.m.
