FRESNO, Calif. -- New Mexico State blitzed by Portland, utilizing a seven-run third inning, to win 10-1. The game was a morning contest as part of the 30th Annual Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic tournament, hosted by Fresno State.
Portland pitcher David Gruener was pitching smoothly with two outs in the third, until he ran into trouble. The Aggies rallied when third baseman Marcus Quade singled home a run. New Mexico State scored once more before the floodgates opened. Taking advantage of two errors, New Mexico State scored seven times in all, one run at a time.
That was more than enough for Aggie starter Heath Goin. He pitched scoreless ball for seven innings, striking out five for the win.
Quade, second baseman Bryan Marquez and left fielder Trevor Bloom each collected three hits for the Aggies.
New Mexico State, now 2-2 in round-robin play, takes on Gonzaga, Friday at 2 p.m. PT. Portland falls to 2-2 in the tournament and will face Indiana Friday at 10 a.m. PT. All games are at Pete Beiden Field on the Fresno State campus.
