Gonzaga Advances To Championship Game By Downing New Mexico State, 17-10

    FRESNO, Calif. -- Gonzaga jumped out to an early lead scoring nine runs in the first three innings on the fifth day of the 30th annual Pepsi Johnny Quik tournament at Pete Beiden Field in Fresno, Calif. The win moves Gonzaga to the championship game to play Utah on Saturday night.

    The Gonzaga Bulldogs scored three runs in the second inning powered by Evan Wells who singled to right field with the bases loaded to bring in two runs.

    New Mexico State tried to hang in with a Colin Crouthamel homerun to left field in the second inning for his fourth homerun of the season.

    Gonzaga countered with six more runs in the third to blow past the Aggies. To start the inning Grant Kveder and Drew Heid both had an RBI highlighted with a two doubles by Heid and Brett Nocholas.

    Trevor Bloom of New Mexico State hit a deep shot to center field to get a double in the sixth bringing in two runs where the Aggies rallied back 11-6.

    The Aggies didn't rally for long. The Bulldogs answered back with five runs in the seventh to extend the lead 16-6.

    Gonzaga finished the game with 21 hits while the Aggies pounded out 14.

    Gonzaga will play Utah at 6 p.m. Saturday evening in the Pepsi Johnny Quik Championship game. New Mexico State will play Indiana in the third place game at 10 a.m. Fresno State and Portland will play Saturday at 2 p.m. at Pete Beiden Field.
