The Fresno State baseball team will look to put last weekend behind them as they get set to host the California Golden Bears Tuesday evening at Beiden Field. A day later, Wednesday, the 'Dogs will close their seven-game homestand with BYU. First pitch is slated for 6:35 p.m. for both midweek contests.
Before being swept by Mountain West conference foe New Mexico (9-7, 6-2, 6-4), Fresno State boasted a 9-1 record at Beiden Field, using its home field advantage to the utmost. Tuesday, the 'Dogs will look to get back to their winning ways at Beiden against the Bears from the Pac-12. The Bulldogs own a 6-1 record versus nonconference opponents at home and an 8-3 overall record against teams outside the MW.
The last time California took a trip to Fresno was on March 27, 2012, the Bears defeated the Bulldogs 7-6. The two most recently paired for a four-game series in Berkeley a season ago, the Bears took all four (5-4 in 10, 8-1, 4-3, 8-4) March 7-10. Fresno State last defeated Cal on Feb. 22, 2004, the 'Dogs will seek to break an eight-game win streak held by California on Tuesday.
Junior RHP Will Munro (1-0, 2.70 ERA) is projected to make his third start of the season for Fresno State. Cal will throw freshman RHP Alex Martinez (0-1, 1.38 ERA).
From the dish, the Bulldogs will rely upon the steady bat of junior Jordan Luplow to disrupt Martinez at the bump. The junior outfielder has been on a tear recently, last week in five games he hit for a .471 average with nine RBIs, two home runs, six runs scored, three doubles and two stolen bases. Luplow extended his hitting streak to 16 games.
Tuesday is staff and faculty appreciation night, all Fresno State staff and faculty will be admitted to Tuesday’s game for free and honored during the game.
