About the UNLV Rebels
UNLV enters the weekend series with the best overall record in the Mountain West at 20-8 overall but sit second in the conference with a 5-4 mark this season. The Rebels rebounded last weekend with a three-game series sweep of Air Force at home before having lost 3-of-4 on the road in an extended conference series at San Diego State. On the road this season UNLV is 6-4 with most notably a three-game series sweep of No. 9 Stanford on its resume away from Las Vegas. The Rebels' pitching staff has led the team to a league-high 20 wins with a MW best 3.38 ERA while junior Brady Borden leads the conference with a 1.71 ERA and a 3-1 record in seven starts. The Rebels are coached by Tim Chambers who is in his third season.
Here Comes The Judge!
Fresno State junior outfielder Aaron Judge has been ruling pitchers throughout his career and stepped onto the national stage last July when he won the 2012 TD Ameritrade College Baseball Home Run Derby in Omaha. This season, Judge leads the Bulldogs with a .343 batting average, a .420 on base percentage, a .556 slugging percentage, 34 hits, four home runs, 14 total runs scored, 13 walks, seven doubles, one triple and 55 total bases. He is also 2-for-2 in stolen base attempts.
Seniors Provide Veteran Leadership, Significant Impact
Fresno State seniors Trent Garrison and Austin Wynns both are batting over .250 with a combined total of 43 hits, 20 runs batted in, 18 runs scored, eight triples, and 13 walks. Garrison alone has successfully stolen two bases this year in three attempts.
Velazquez Stepping into Key Role on the Mound
In his first season as a Bulldog, Fresno State sophomore right-hander Derick Velazquez has frustrated opposing batters and already earned a Mountain West weekly accolade for his complete game win over USC. Velazquez, a sophomore from Los Banos, Calif., didn't allow an earned run over nine strong innings of work in the win over the Trojans. Velazquez had a shutout going until the final out of the contest when an unearned run crossed the plate on a walk. Last week, he started both of Fresno State's victories, including a 4-0 shutout of MW foe Nevada. This season, Velazquez has posted a 4.46 earned run average, started in seven games, and completed one game. While giving up just 18 runs, he has held opponents to a .295 batting average.
