Fresno State is set to host New Mexico in a Mountain West series this weekend.
Fresno State's Aaron Judge won the 2012 TD Ameritrade College Baseball Home Run Derby and entered the 2013 season with three Preseason All-American honors.
Judge was also selected to both the preseason and midseason USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award Watch List, which honors the nation's best amateur player.
Fresno State to Host Regular Season MW Champs This Weekend
As winners of seven straight at home, the Bulldogs will close out the regular season at Pete Beiden Field with home games versus New Mexico (May 10-12) and Nevada (May 16-18). The 'Dogs and Lobos will play a three-game series with single games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. All games can be heard live on either ESPN Radio 940 AM or 790 AM ESPN The Deuce.
Baseball Teams Up with First 5 of Fresno
The Fresno State baseball team and First 5 of Fresno are teaming up for a book drive that will benefit children in the Valley. The `Dogs and First 5 of Fresno will be collecting books on May 10 before the first game of the series against New Mexico. Fans who donate books on Friday night will receive free admission to the game. First 5 Fresno County is an advocacy organization that invests resources and supports efforts to improve the lives of children ages 0-5 and their families. First 5 Fresno County was created in 1998 when California voters passed Proposition 10, "The Children and Families Act."
About the New Mexico Lobos
New Mexico enters the weekend series against the 'Dogs having clinched the Mountain West regular season title last time out with a 14-7 win against Air Force last Sunday in Albuquerque. The Lobos hold a 20-4 conference record, a 31-17 overall record and were ranked No. 16 in the latest Baseball America poll. Following their three-game sweep of Air Force, the Lobos hit the road for the remaining six games on their schedule leading up to the MW Baseball Championship where they will hold the No. 1 seed. UNM holds a 7-2 record on the road against conference opponents and a 9-8 overall record away from home. Leading the way for the Lobos is junior infielder D.J. Peterson, the Gilbert Ariz. native leads the MW in home runs (13), RBIs (58), runs scored (57), doubles (22) and sits No. 2 in batting average (.410). As a team the Lobos lead the MW in batting average (.342), home runs (35), RBIs (368), runs scored (402) and doubles (123). The Lobos are coached by Ray Birmingham who is in his sixth season. Peterson returned 17 lettermen from last season's squad that finished first in the MW (37-24, 18-6 MW).
Here Comes The Judge!
Fresno State junior outfielder Aaron Judge has been ruling pitchers throughout his career and stepped onto the national stage last July when he won the 2012 TD Ameritrade College Baseball Home Run Derby in Omaha. This season, Judge leads the Bulldogs with a .366 batting average, a .456 on base percentage, a .634 slugging percentage, 63 hits, nine home runs, 37 runs, 30 RBIs, 30 walks, 13 doubles, three triples and 109 total bases. He is also 10-for-11 in stolen base attempts.
Judge Named to Midseason National Watch List
Judge was named to USA Baseball's midseason Golden Spikes Award Watch List on Thursday. The junior was also one of the 32 original members to remain on the Golden Spikes Watch List from its original 50-man list released during the preseason on Feb. 14.
2013 Mountain West Baseball Tournament Tickets on Sale Now
Fresno State will host the 2013 Mountain West Baseball Tournament from May 22-26. All session tickets are available for $30 for upper reserved (college student, senior citizens, and youth), $40 for upper reserved (adult) and $50 for lower box reserved. Tickets include all games of the tournament. All six Mountain West teams will be participating in the tournament.
