Bulldog Baseball In Review - Summer Edition

    FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State baseball program saw 24 players from the 2014 roster play summer baseball in all parts of the country and at all different levels. Five former Diamond `Dogs began their professional careers playing in Rookie Leagues of Short Season Class A ball for their respective teams. Taylor Ward, who was one of two 'Dogs to play in the Cape Cod League this summer, was part of a group of 24 players selected to the USA Collegiate National Team this summer. Garrett Mundell also traveled to the Cape to take part in the most prestigious collegiate summer league in the country. Another five Bulldogs went up north to play in the Alaska Baseball League. The program also sent players to the Chicago area and also to leagues throughout the state of California.

    With school getting ready to start back up on next Thursday and the team returning to campus, it's time to recap what the 'Dogs accomplished over the summer with their respective teams.

    RETURNING BULLDOGS

    Ryan Dobson (So.)
    Alaska Baseball League - Anchorage Pilots
    Played in 22 games for the Pilots, finishing the summer with a .190 batting average ... had two doubles among his 12 hits and scored eight runs ... ended the season with a .959 fielding percentage while making just three errors.

    Kevin Viers (Jr.)
    Alaska Baseball League - Anchorage Pilots
    Played in 32 games, and of the players that played at least 30 games for the Pilots this summer, Viers finished with the second highest batting average at .276 ... finished with 32 hits, including seven doubles, three triples, six home runs and a team-leading 27 RBI ... also finished tied for the team lead with 20 runs scored.

     

     

    Fred Schlichtholz (So.)
    Alaska Baseball League - Anchorage Pilots
    Threw 12 innings in seven appearances for the Pilots ... finished with an 8.25 ERA, giving up 19 hits and striking out nine batters.

    Jimmy Lambert (So.)
    Alaska Baseball League - Anchorage Bucs
    Made two appearances and both were starts for the Bucs ... threw seven innings and allowed just five hits and one run to finish with a 1.29 ERA ... struck out four batters and issued just one free pass.

    Jake Stone (So.)
    Alaska Baseball League - Anchorage Bucs
    Appeared in 11 games, finishing with a .156 batting average ... had five hits, two going for doubles ... also scored two runs and hit a home run to go along with seven RBI.

    Manny Argomaniz (So.)
    California Collegiate League - Los Angeles Brewers
    Played in 35 games, making 128 plate appearances over the summer ... finished with a .225 average while collecting 25 hits ... had nine doubles, 10 RBI and 16 runs scored ... team finished with a 34-7 record.

    Garrett Mundell (Sr.)
    Cape Cod League - Brewster Whitecaps
    Made 10 appearances, including making seven starts which was tied for the team-high ... Threw 40.2 innings over his 10 appearances with a 4.20 ERA ... allowed 42 hits and struck out 27 batters while finishing the summer with a 1-2 record.

    Taylor Ward (Jr.)
    Cape Cod League - Orleans Firebirds/Team USA Collegiate National Team
    Appeared in seven games for the Firebirds at the beginning of the summer before being one of 24 players selected to play for the Team USA Collegiate National Team ... in his seven games on the Cape, Ward was 4-for-18 with a double and a home run ... he also scored two runs and drove in two runs.

    Kody Batesole (RFr.)
    Chicago Suburban Baseball - Crystal Lake Cardinals
    Played in 34 games and made 121 plate appearances ... collected 34 hits to finish with a .309 batting average ... finished with five doubles, three home runs and also had 20 RBI ... scored 22 runs and finished second on the team with seven HBP.

    Logan Poisall (RFr.)
    Chicago Suburban Baseball - Crystal Lake Cardinals
    Appeared in 36 games and made 122 plate appearances ... finished the summer with 28 hits, including five doubles while hitting for a .295 average ... also scored 27 runs and had 13 RBI ... finished third on the team with eight stolen bases.

    William Munro (Sr.)
    Chicago Suburban Baseball - Crystal Lake Cardinals
    Made 10 appearances and finished with a 2-1 record and three saves ... threw 23 innings and allowed just three earned runs to end the summer with a .96 ERA ... struck out 26 batters and allowed just 16 hits while limiting hitters to just a .186 batting average against him.

    Torin Goldstein (RFr.)
    Golden State Collegiate Baseball League - Healdsburg Prune Packers
    Played in 45 games with 146 at bats for the summer ... finished with a .301 batting average with 44 hits ... had 10 doubles, a triple and two home runs while driving in 25 runs and scoring 33 times ... led the team with 35 walks.

    Austin Guibor (So.)
    Golden State Collegiate Baseball League - Healdsburg Prune Packers
    Ranked second on the team with a .337 batting average in 30 games played ... registered 32 hits with 95 plate appearances ... totaled 13 RBI, doubled seven times and had two home runs ... also stole six bases.

    Joe Prior (So.)
    Golden State Collegiate Baseball League - Healdsburg Prune Packers
    Finished second on the team with 51 games played and was third on the team with 171 at bats ... hit .316 with 54 hits over the summer ... had nine doubles, three triples and four home runs while driving in 40 runs ... he also scored 32 runs.

    Jesse Medrano (So.)
    Golden State Collegiate Baseball League - South Bay Storm
    Played in 45 games with 167 at bats for the summer ... hit .293 with a team-high 49 hits ... tallied six doubles, two triples and two home runs while finishing the summer with 25 RBI ... finished tied for the team-high with 27 runs scored.

    Taylor Tempel (Sr.)
    Far West League - Humboldt Crabs
    Played in 29 games and finished with a .250 batting average ... had 28 hits, including five doubles, a triple and three home runs ... ended the summer with 14 runs scored and 19 RBI ... was 9-for-10 on stolen bases.

    Jake Shull (Jr.)
    Far West League - Humboldt Crabs
    Made 9 appearances and seven were starts while tallying 41.1 innings over the summer ... finished with a 1.09 ERA, allowing just five earned runs ... gave up 25 hits and held opponents to a .172 batting average against him ... struck out 36 batters and walked just 12 ... had a 2-1 record.

    Casey Rodriguez (Sr.)
    Far West League - Humboldt Crabs
    Made 13 appearances and two were starts while throwing 33.2 innings this summer ... finished with a 2-2 record and also recorded a save ... allowed just five earned runs to finish with a 1.34 ERA ... had 22 strikeouts and just seven walks.

    Dillon Houser (So.)
    Far West League - Humboldt Crabs
    Made 10 appearances this summer, including making four starts and finished the summer with 35.2 innings pitched ... had a 4-1 record and a 1.51 ERA ... allowed just six earned runs and 28 hits ... also recorded 28 strikeouts.

    Blake Quinn (Jr.)
    Northwoods League - Rochester Honkers
    Made 10 appearances with three starts while throwing 19.2 innings this summer ... allowed 25 hits and struck out 15 hitters ... finished the summer with an 8.23 ERA.

    'Dogs Selected in the 2014 MLB Draft

    Jordan Brink - Chicago Cubs
    11th Round - No. 319 overall pick

    Made 1 appearance for the Cubs' Arizona Rookie League team and threw a single inning ... in that one inning, he struck out two and didn't allow a hit.

    Derick Velazquez - Houston Astros
    7th Round - No. 196 overall pick

    Has made 13 appearances for the Tri-City ValleyCats of the New York-Penn League ... thrown 15.1 innings and has a 2.35 ERA ... allowed just 12 hits and has struck out 17 hitters ... has a 1-1 record and recorded three saves in three chances.

    Trent Woodward - Houston Astros
    20th Round - No. 586 overall pick

    Played in 27 games for the Greenville Astros in the Appalachian League ... hitting .234 with 22 hits on the season, including seven doubles, a triple and two home runs ... has scored 19 runs and recorded 14 RBI.

    Jordan Luplow - Pittsburgh Pirates
    3rd Round - No. 100 overall pick

    Played in 43 games for the Jamestown Jammers in the New York-Penn League ... hitting .274 with 43 hits ... of the 43 hits, he has nine doubles, a triple and four home runs ... has scored 21 runs and has 20 RBI ... he has also stolen seven bases.

    Chris Mariscal - Seattle Mariners
    14th Round - No. 411 overall pick

    Played in 36 games for the Everett AquaSox of the Northwest League ... hitting. 263 with 35 hits for the season ... of those hits, five have gone for doubles and also has a triple and two home runs ... scored 18 runs and has 12 RBI.
