FRESNO, Calif. - The two-time defending Western Athletic Conference Champion Fresno State baseball team has announced the lineup for the 2008 Pepsi Johnny Quik Classic to be held at Beiden Field March 10-15.
In the 30th anniversary of the classic, the Bulldogs welcome Utah, fellow WAC opponent New Mexico State, West Coast Conference teams Portland and Gonzaga, and the Hoosiers from Indiana.
"The tournament teams for this year are tremendous, we are proud to bring this event to the college baseball fans in the valley," said Ernie Beal of Johnny Quik.
"The Pepsi Johnny Quik tournament is going to return to being one of the top tournament's in the country this year," said head coach Mike Batesole. "We have six teams from six different states and that is the strongest field that we have probably had in 10 or 15 years."
The inaugural Pepsi Johnny Quik tournament was held in 1978 and has been held each year since, except 1980. Fresno State has won the tournament 15 times, including the last four and eight of the last 11.
"What Pepsi Johnny Quik is doing for these young people is fantastic," Batesole said. "The student-athletes and their families are always going to remember this tournament and that Pepsi Johnny Quik put it on."
Big 10 Indiana will meet Fresno State for the first time at the Pepsi Johnny Quik. The Hoosiers finished 19-35 overall and 8-23 in conference play in 2007, ending their season with a 10-9 loss to Minnesota, a team FS defeated in the regionals of the NCAA tournament in 2007.
The University of Portland trails the Bulldogs in the all-time series 5-3. The two teams played three times in 2006 with FS winning the last game 16-5.The Pilots finished the 2007 season with a 21-30 overall record and a 7-14 mark in WCC play.
In the battle of the Bulldogs, Fresno State has dominated Gonzaga over the years leading the overall series 25-1. Fresno State won the last meeting, 5-1, in 2006 with the `Zags only win being in 1999. Gonzaga lost to San Diego in the West Coast Conference Championship last season and just missed getting an automatic berth to the NCAA tournament with a 33-25 record.
Fresno State leads the all-time series 6-1 over Utah. The Utes won the last meeting 2-4 back in 1999. Utah went 24-31 in 2007 and lost to San Diego in the second round of the Mountain West tournament to end its season.
New Mexico State finished 22-34 last season and 6-18 in the WAC, just missing the conference tournament. The Bulldogs lead the series 9-2, including sweeping the Aggies in 2007 in Fresno.
