Bob Burton is in his first year as assistant at Fresno State. He joins the Bulldog staff after serving as the head coach at West Valley (Saratoga, Calif.) Junior College since 1980. Burton, a 1968 Fresno State graduate with a degree in social sciences, posted a record of 507-167 at West Valley, where he coached Lopes. Lopes also served as an assistant coach under Burton at West Valley during the 1987-88 season. "I am excited to have Bob join our staff at Fresno State," Lopes said. "I have had a long-term relationship with him. He was my head coach in the early 1980s and helped me get my coaching start in the late 1980s. He has over 20 years of head coaching experience in the California Community College ranks. Bob is a tireless worker, a great coach and an outstanding recruiter. He will be a tremendous asset to our program, our campus community and the Fresno community overall." Burton was named the conference coach of the year nine times, including this past season. He was selected the California Community College Coach of the Year four times. He guided the Vikings to the finals of the California Community College State tournament in 1991, 1995 and 1996. Burton took a one-year leave at West Valley, serving as an assistant coach at the University of Utah for the 1986-87 season, helping the Utes to a 19-10 record and NIT berth, before returning to West Valley. Burton earned a master's degree in physical education from Cal Poly in 1969, where he served as an assistant coach for one season. Burton's wife, Toni, is a school teacher. |
