FRESNO, Calif. -- Fresno State used a 12-0 run to end of the first half and build a 13-point lead, then held off a hard charging Colorado State team for a 75-66 win on Saturday night at the Save Mart Center to extend its winning streak to five games.
The win also moved the Bulldogs into seventh place alone and leaves them just a game back of fifth.
Balanced scoring in the opening 20 minutes propelled Fresno State (13-13, 6-7 MW) to the 38-25 halftime lead. Alex Davis, Marvelle Harris and Allen Huddleston all scored nine points in the first half and Cezar Guerrero chipped in seven. That scoring helped make up for a lack of scoring from leading scorer Tyler Johnson. He was limited to just one made free throw and only attempted one shot.
But the Rams (14-12, 5-8) couldn't keep Johnson quiet for long.
The senior erupted for 17 points in the second half, including the highlight of the night when he drove the lane and dunked over Colorado State's Carlton Hurst. Johnson was three for four on three-pointers in the second half.
Fresno State saw their lead, which had been as big as 16 at one point in the second half, cut to 68-62 with 2:09 to play. However, free throws and great ball movement helped the Bulldogs finish the deal and extend their winning streak. Harris was the leader at the free throw, finishing 10 of 11 as part of the team's 17-23 effort at the line.
Fresno State is back in action on Tuesday, February 18, when they begin a two-game road trip at Wyoming. The Cowboys are in fourth place in the Mountain West and sit one and a half games ahead of the Bulldogs in the conference standings at 7-5.
