FRESNO, Calif. -- Thanks to a strong night from the perimeter, the Fresno State men's basketball team opened the exhibition season with a 76-71 win over Cal State Stanislaus on Friday night at the Save Mart Center. The Bulldogs knocked down nine three pointers compared to just three for the Warriors.
Tyler Johnson and Marvelle Harris led the way with 23 points apiece for Fresno State, which included a combined 18-for-22 effort from the free throw line. The high-scoring duo also knocked down three three-point shots each.
Johnson, a senior from Mountain View and the team's leading scorer from a year ago, was a perfect 10-for-10 from the line and made four of those freebies down the stretch to help put away the pesky Warriors. He also finished with six rebounds.
Harris finished with a double-double by grabbing 10 rebounds to go with his 23-point night. The sophomore from Rialto lit up Cal State Stanislaus in the first half for 13 of his 23 points, thanks to 3-of-7 shooting from beyond the arc.
Senior Allen Huddleston finished with 16 points to give the Bulldogs a trio of players in double figures.
Besides the large advantage from the perimeter, Fresno State also dominated the Warriors at the free throw stripe. The Bulldogs were 27-for-37, while Cal State Stanislaus was just 14-for-23.
A balanced scoring effort from the Warriors that saw eight of eleven players score kept them in the game the entire way. Fresno State's largest lead was 11 and that came late in the first half. The closest Cal State Stanislaus got in the second half was 63-61 with just over five minutes to play, but then Johnson and Harris were there to close it out. The combo scored 11 of the Bulldogs' final 13 points to help seal the exhibition victory.
The Warriors were led by a double-double performance from Rob Walters, who finished with 16 points and 16 rebounds. He was joined in double figures by Chris Read, who finished with 13.
Fresno State is back in action on Monday, November 4, when they close out their exhibition schedule with Dominican. The regular-season opener is a week from tonight, November 8, on the road at UC Irvine.
