FRESNO, Calif. --- In one of the most thrilling finishes imaginable - especially on the first day of the college basketball season, Bulldogs' senior guard Allen Huddleston delivered the epic 40-foot 3-pointer from half court at the overtime buzzer that lifted Fresno State past UC Irvine 98-97 on Friday night at the Bren Events Center.

The game-winner - which was featured as the top story on ESPN's 11 p.m. PT Sportscenter telecast - was the fifth lead change in the final minute of overtime of a game. Later in that Sportscenter broadcast, Huddleston was on live with ESPN's Stan Verrett talking about the buzzer-beater that punctuated the opening day of the season.

"Really proud of the way my guys hung tough against a well coached tourney team tonight," Fresno State head coach Rodney Terry (@RodneyTerry) tweeted after the win. "Excited for my guys!"

Fresno State shot a blistering 51.6 percent from the field, including 14-of-30 from beyond the 3-point arc and largely limited UCI's size advantage in the post. The 'Dogs held the Anteaters' 7-6 center Mamadou Ndiaye to just five points and four rebounds. Alex Young led UCI with 27 points and Will Davis added a double-double with 10 points and 16 rebounds.

But to put themselves in position to take down the preseason Big West favorite, the Bulldogs turned to its backcourt - that produced an outstanding effort and scored 78 of Fresno State's 98 points.

Marvelle Harris scored a career-high 30 points on 10-of-15 shooting and a career-best five assists with seven rebounds to lead five Bulldogs in double-figures as Fresno State erased a 12-point deficit to force overtime and gut out the hard-fought road win.

Fresno State point guard Cezar Guerrero - making his Bulldog debut - added 23 points with five 3-pointers and four steals. Senior guard Tyler Johnson nearly posted a triple double in scoring 13 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists - and tossed the inbounds pass to Huddleston on the game-winning play.

Freshman forward Paul Watson netted 18 points, four rebounds and picked up two steals. Huddleston finished with 12 points and three assists.

With the win, Fresno State improved to 6-0 on the road when taking on Big West teams since Terry's arrival in 2011.

Fresno State (1-0) returns to action on Tuesday night at Pittsburgh (1-0), who is receiving votes in both national polls.
