'Dogs D Comes Up Big in 39-30 Win
Nov. 14, 2012
By Stephen Trembley RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- The Fresno State men's basketball team survived a trip to the Inland Empire by beating UC Riverside 39-30 on Tuesday night at SRC Arena. The defensive stalemate featured just 23 combined field goals as the Fresno State defense held the Highlanders to just 12-of-49 (24.5 percent) shooting from the floor. "That was a struggle tonight," Fresno State head coach Rodney Terry said. "We obviously didn't perform offensively like we wanted, but we have to be happy with how our defense played. To go on the road and win is always a challenge." Bulldogs' junior point guard Allen Huddleston led the Bulldogs with a game-high 17 points, including five crucial free throws in the second half to help seal the win. The Bulldogs used a 14-0 run over a span of 10:03 in the second half to build a 32-23 advantage and never relinquished the lead down the stretch. "If we can compete with anywhere close to the tenacity as Coach Grant's teams did, we'll be a team that has a chance to win every night," Terry added when told that the last time a Fresno State team won when scoring under 40 points was early in the season by the eventual 1983 NIT championship squad. Fresno State (1-1) hosts Pacific (1-0) on Friday night at 7 p.m. PT to begin the Bulldogs' tenth season at the Save Mart Center.
