FRESNO, Calif. --- Sophomore guard Marvelle Harris scored a game-high 26 points for the home team as the Fresno State men's basketball team lost 84-74 to the Drake Bulldogs on day one of the 29th Fresno State Classic, presented by The First Tee of Fresno, on Friday night at the Save Mart Center.

Harris posted his 26 points by making 10 of his 18 field goal attempts, including a career-high five 3-points, to record his second career game of over 25 points. He also tallied three rebounds, one assist and a block.

"I don't fault the effort, we're battling and getting better," Fresno State head coach Rodney Terry said. "We're playing a little short-handed, but the effort was really good. Other guys got an opportunity to step up."

The reason for the short-handed arsenal was largely due to the right foot injury suffered by senior guard Tyler Johnson in Monday's 92-59 win over San Diego Christian. He is listed as day-to-day, and will be reevaluated before Saturday's game.

Fresno State (4-3) made 47.2 percent (25-of-53) of their field goal attempts, but allowed Drake (4-1) to shoot 56.1 percent (32-57) from the floor.

The squads played close for nearly the first 33 minutes when Fresno State freshman Karachi Edo slammed down a put-back dunk to give Fresno State a 61-60 lead with 7:37 to play. Drake responded with a 17-6 run for an 11-point lead that the visitors never relinquished. Fresno State cut the deficit to five on a Guerrero 3-pointer with 1:24 remaining, yet couldn't pull closer.

Gary Ricks scored 25 points to lead Drake, which also had 21 points from Richard Carter.

The score was tied six times and there were seven lead changes.

Fresno State returns to action for day two of the three-day tournament on Saturday night at 7 p.m. PT when the 'Dogs host the Bakersfield Roadrunners while Drake squares off against Northern Arizona at 4:30 p.m. PT. Bakersfield beat NAU 61-50 in the early game on Friday.
