SALT LAKE CITY - A feverish tempo and lights-out shooting showcase lifted the Utah Runnin' Utes past the Fresno State men's basketball team 90-77 on Saturday afternoon at the Huntsman Center.
"Shooting percentage was the big difference in the game," Fresno State head coach Rodney Terry said. "We are going to struggle with it at times. We can't let guys get into the type of defense they were tonight consistently. We just have to do a better job with that. We have worked on it and know we have to adjust our defense to stay on the basketball and the toughest part right now is the little mistakes."
Fresno State sophomore guard Marvelle Harris scored a team-high 23 points for his fourth scoring effort this season with at least 20 and fifth of his career. Freshman Paul Watson also surpassed the 20-point mark by netting a career-high 22 points.
Sophomore point guard Cezar Guerrero also reached double-digits. Guerrero posted 16 points and has now scored at least 10 in all 10 of Fresno State's games this season. Alex Davis added seven points and six rebounds. Karachi Edo also chipped in seven points and four rebounds.
The Bulldogs pushed the pace early and built a 39-32 lead with 2:30 left until halftime.
But that's when Utah made its move. The Runnin' Utes closed the half with eight straight points and extended the run to 14-0 and Utah had a 46-39 lead early in the second half.
Fresno State got as close as 56-52 before the Utes pulled away.
Utah (7-1) shot 59.6 percent from the floor, including 63 percent clip in the second half, while Fresno State also shot the ball well - converting 50.9 percent of its field goal attempts in the game.
Despite facing a Utes squad that boasted a rebounding advantage of 11 per game entering the game, the Bulldogs held serve on the boards and even outrebounded Utah on the offensive glass (6-5).
But Davis, Harris and Watson found themselves in foul trouble for most of the second half and the Utes took advantage.
Utah's Delon Wright scored a game-best 23 points as he went 9-of-12 from the floor. Jordan Loveridge notched a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Utes. Six Utes scored at least 10 points.
