BERKELEY, Calif. --- For Fresno State, the focus in practice placed an extra emphasis on defense and the hard work helped the Bulldogs give the California Golden Bears fits, but the 'Dogs struggled to muster enough offense in a 67-56 road loss at Haas Pavilion on Saturday afternoon.
Fresno State (6-5) battled hard and had its chances to make a late run, but California's Richard Solomon had his third double-double of the season with a season-high 17 points and a team-high 14 rebounds. The win moved California to 7-0 at home this season.
Justin Cobbs scored 13 points for the Bears (8-3) while Tyrone Wallace had 12 and Ricky Kreklow posted 11 to round out the four California players in double figures.
Cal coach Mike Montgomery moved past the late John Wooden into sole possession of 27th place on the Division I list for victories with his 665th win. He ranks ninth among active Division I coaches.
Bulldogs' guard Marvelle Harris finished with 13 points on 5-for-18 shooting.
After missing the past four games due to injury, senior guard Tyler Johnson returned to the starting lineup and scored 12 points for the Bulldogs. Cezar Guerrero added 10 points to register his 11th straight double-digit scoring effort.
Fresno State wraps up its three-game road stretch when the Bulldogs head to the Sunshine State play No. 19 Florida in the 2013 MetroPCS Orange Bowl Basketball Classic on Dec. 21 in Sunrise, Fla.
