FRESNO, Calif. - The Dogs return home on Feb. 20 to take on Hawaii and then host Cal Poly in the annual Bracketbuster game on Feb. 23 at the Save Mart Center. Fresno State will play four of its final five games at home. The one road game is at Utah State. The Dogs will host Hawaii, Cal Poly, New Mexico State and Nevada.
Scouting the Warriors
Coming off a five-point win over WAC leader Utah State, the Hawaii squad comes to the mainland for two games this week. The Warriors come to the Save Mart Center on Wednesday and play at UC-Riverside in the Bracketbuster game on Saturday. Senior Matt Gibson continues to lead the Warrirors in scoring at 16.9 points per game while fellow senior Bobby Nash is averageing 14.5 per contest. Fresno State and Hawaii are the only two WAC teams with two players ranked in the top 10 in scoring.
The Dogs have won 15 of the 29 games played in this series, but the Warriors have won four of the last five including a sweep during the 2006-07 season and a 75-62 victory in mid-January in Honolulu. Hawaii won 54-42 at the Save Mart Center last season. Fresno State is 9-8 in games played in Fresno. The series began in 1941.
One of the most memorable and exciting games in the series happened in the semifinals of 2000 WAC Tournament at Selland Arena, a game that took two overtimes to decide and Dogs won 103-100. That game catapulted the Dogs to the WAC Tournament title and a berth in the NCAA Tournament.
NIT Champs Honored
Fresno State will honor the 25th Anniversary of the 1983 NIT Championship Bulldog team on Feb. 23. Members of the team will be honored during halftime ceremonies.
Dogs Love the Three
The Bulldogs have been raining down three point field goals all season and are leading the the WAC with 10 more treys than No. 2 Boise State. Fresno State's 216 threes this season rank No. 33 among all Division I programs this season. Not only are the Dogs making a lot of threes, they do it with a nice percentage. Fresno State is making .341 of three point field goal attempts.
Bell Climbs Record Books, Has Gywnn and Hardaway in His Sights
Fresno State senior point guard Kevin Bell is working his way up the record books this season in his final year in a Bulldog uniform. Bell moved into second place in Fresno State history for assists. He is 37 assists away from passing Dominick Young for the all-time record. Bell has led the WAC in assists the last two seasons and his assist total has gone up all three years he has been here. He'll need to average 6.0 assists per game to catch Young. In addition to handing out assists, Bell has moved into Fresno State's top 25 in career points. At his current pace of more than 17 points per game, he will finish in top 20 all-time for Bulldog scorers. If Bell leads the WAC in assists again this season, it would mark the 11th time in the last 15 years a Bulldog player has led the league in assists. Others to leads the WAC in assists were: Shantay Legans, Tito Maddox, Demetrius Porter, Chris Herron, Dominick Young and Brian Santiago.
Two WAC legends, UTEP's Tim Hardaway and San Diego State's Tony Gwynn are within reach. He needs three assists to pass Hardaway and 30 to pass Gwynn.
