March 7, 2010
FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State's Greg Smith, Paul George and Sylvester Seay earned postseason honors from the Western Athletic Conference's head men's basketball coaches today. Smith, a center from Fresno, Calif., is the second Bulldog player in team history to earn the WAC's Freshman of the Year award and also grabbed All-Newcomer Team recognition. In 16 conference games, Smith averaged 11.4 points per contest and 5.8 rebounds per game, while shooting 53.1 percent from the field. The only other Bulldog to receive the recognition was Tito Maddox for his play during the 2000-01 season. Smith ranked in the top 20 in the nation in field goal percentage and led the team with four double-doubles. He also averaged 12 points and six rebounds per game throughout the 32-game season where Smith was the only Bulldog to start every game. George, a small forward from Palmdale, Calif., headlined the 2009-10 All-WAC's second-team. George finished his breakout sophomore season as the Bulldogs' top scorer (16.6 ppg), rebounder (7.1 rpg), steals machine (2.2 spg), best free throw shooter (90.6%) and owned the most minutes/game for the second straight season (33.0 mpg). Seay, a senior forward from San Bernardino, Calif., garnered honorable mention accolades after becoming the 30th highest scorer in program history with 980 points in a Bulldog uniform and over 1,100 during his four-year Division I career. Seay has also notched the seventh most blocks (94) in Bulldog history. George and Seay had each been honored prior to the 2009-10 campaign as preseason second-team honorees.
In the competitive and experienced conference, the season-end first team is led by Nevada sophomore forward Luke Babbitt, who was also voted the WAC's Player of the Year. Babbitt led the WAC in scoring at 23.7 points per game and ranked third in rebounding at 8.9 rebounds per game in WAC play. Utah State's Jared Quayle and Tai Wesley, New Mexico State's Jahmar Young and San Jose State's Adrian Oliver were also first team selections.
Babbitt, Quayle and Young are repeat all-WAC honorees from last season. Babbitt and Young earned first team all-WAC honors last year, while Quayle received second team honors in 2009. In addition to George, this year's all-WAC second team consists of Louisiana Tech's Kyle Gibson and Magnum Rolle, Nevada's Armon Johnson and New Mexico State's Jonathan Gibson. Gibson and Johnson also earned all-WAC honors last season. Utah State head coach Stew Morrill earned his second Don Haskins Coach of the Year honor by leading the Aggies to a third-straight regular season WAC title. In his 12th year with Utah State, Morrill led the Aggies to a 14-2 conference record. Those named to the WAC's all-defensive team were Idaho's Marvin Jefferson, Louisiana Tech's Kyle Gibson and Magnum Rolle, Nevada's Dario Hunt and Utah State's Pooh Williams. The other four members besides Smith on the WAC's all-newcomer team were Boise State's Daequon Montreal, Louisiana Tech's DeAndre Brown, and Utah State's Nate Bendall and Brian Green.
