LAS VEGAS --- Fresno State freshman forward/guard Paul Watson was named the Mountain West's Freshman of the Year, senior guard Tyler Johnson earned second-team All-MW honors and sophomore guard Marvelle Harris received an honorable mention All-MW distinction by the league's head men's basketball coaches and select media members.
"It's a great honor for Tyler Johnson and Marvelle Harris to be recognized as all-conference performers," Fresno State head coach Rodney Terry said. "Our coaching staff and team are extremely proud of both of them, and they are well aware that they could not have achieved this recognition without the help of their teammates. They are both team-first guys that have been instrumental to the success of our team this season."
During league play, Watson led all MW freshmen in rebounding (4.6 rpg) and finished second among MW freshmen in scoring (8.6 ppg) and blocked shots (12).
Watson is the third freshman in program history to be named the Freshman of the Year, joining Mike Mitchell (PCAA; 1985-86) and Greg Smith (WAC; 2009-10).
Johnson helped fuel Fresno State's charge down the stretch by averaging 18.2 points, 7.7 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.0 steals per game while Harris posted 14.4 points, 5.9 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.2 steals per game.
Johnson was previously named honorable mention All-MW last season and this is the first All-MW postseason honor for Harris.
"Tyler Johnson has been the consummate senior leader for our ball club, and has worked as hard as anyone to become one of the top players in the Mountain West," Terry said. "Marvelle Harris has made great strides from his freshman to sophomore seasons, and we look for him to continue to strive to be one of the top guards in our conference."
This also marks the first time three Bulldogs were recognized with all-conference postseason honors in the same season since the 2009-10 season when Paul George (second-team), Sylvester Seay (honorable mention) and Greg Smith (All-Newcomer Team; WAC Freshman of the Year) collected awards.
Fresno State enters the 2014 Reese's Mountain West Basketball Championships as the No. 7 seed and opens play 10th-seeded Air Force on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. PT. The game can be viewed live on the Mountain West Network (www.GoBulldogs.com/videos) or heard live on 940 AM ESPN Radio.
