FRESNO, Calif. --- The Fresno State men's basketball team was one of 16 schools in the nation to earn invitations to play in the College Basketball Invitational and will open play in its first postseason appearance since 2007 when the Bulldogs travel to play at UTEP on Wednesday night at 6 p.m. PT in the first round of the CBI.
Fresno State (17-16) enters the CBI having won nine of its last 12 games and earning a tie for fifth in the Mountain West conference standings.
"We're excited about the opportunity to continue to play against a quality opponent who has had a great year competing in a highly competitive league," Fresno State third-year head coach Rodney Terry said. "This is a valuable experience for our program."
If Fresno State defeats UTEP on Wednesday night, the Bulldogs would advance to the CBI Quarterfinals to play the winner of the first round game featuring Tulane and Princeton. The hosting scenario for the quarterfinal game will be announced at a later time.
The CBI is a single-elimination tournament up until the "best-of-three" Championship Series, with all games played at campus sites. After the Opening Round games, the Quarterfinal Round will take place on Monday, March 24, followed by the Semifinal Round on Wednesday, March 26. Prior to the semifinals, the remaining teams will be re-bracketed. The Championship Series is a best-of-three in which one team will host two of the three games. Those games will be played on March 31, April 2, and April 4.
Past CBI champions include Tulsa, Oregon State, VCU, Oregon, Pittsburgh, and Santa Clara. Teams from nearly every major conference and mid-major conference have participated in the event. Eighteen teams have used the CBI to springboard to the NCAA Tournament the following year, while another 10 have gone on to the NIT.
CBS Sports Network is the official television home of the CBI. CBS Sports Network will televise a pair of Quarterfinal Round games on Monday, March 24, as well as the entire Championship Series. Scott Graham and Bob Wenzel will serve as one broadcast team while Dave Armstrong and John Griffin will be the other broadcast team.
The 'Dogs are led by senior guard Tyler Johnson, who averaged over 18 points per game during league play. Johnson was named to the second-team All-Mountain West and second-team All-NABC. Fresno State's Paul Watson won Mountain West Freshman of the Year honors.
The Bulldogs' challenging schedule in 2013-14 featured seven games against five teams that made the 2014 NCAA Tournament - Cal Poly, Florida, New Mexico, Pittsburgh and San Diego State. The 'Dogs also faced three teams that made the NIT - Cal, UC Irvine and Utah.
The CBI first round game between Fresno State and UTEP on Wednesday night will be broadcast on 940 AM ESPN Radio.
