FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State head men's basketball coach Rodney Terry announced Friday that associate head coach Jerry Wainwright has decided to leave the program for personal reasons.

Wainwright came to Fresno State as part of Terry's staff when he was hired to take over the program in April of 2011. Wainwright was the head coach at DePaul for five seasons before coming to Fresno State.

"Having coach Wainwright a part of our staff this past year was an invaluable experience and left a footprint on our program for years to come," Terry said. "His loyalty and commitment to Fresno State men's basketball were at an extremely high level day in and day out. Coach Wainwright will be forever a part of my family as well as our family at Fresno State, and we wish him well."

Fresno State went 13-20 in Wainwright's only season with the Bulldogs, a rebuilding year in which the 'Dogs lost 10 games by five points or less.

"It has been an honor and a privilege to be a member of Rodney Terry's men's basketball staff at Fresno State," Wainwright said. "I would like to thank coach Terry and my fellow coaches, Mike Schwartz, Byron Jones and Nick Matson for the opportunity to be a part of building the foundation for Fresno State's entrance and competitive participation in the Mountain West Conference.

"I would also like to thank the players for all their hard work and dedication. These young men are special and I am very proud of the time I spent with them. The returning student-athletes as well the incoming class is in a program where work ethic, discipline and team play are emphasized. Winning can only come with this backbone of values.

"Finally, I would like to thank the fans and people of Fresno. Their positive attitude, constant encouragement and unwavering loyalty made playing at home an incredible experience. I will never forget the kindness that they have shown. My family and I will always treasure my time spent in the Valley."

The Bulldogs return seven players from the 2011-12 team, including four starters highlighted by guard Kevin Olekaibe who was a second-team NABC All-District 6 selection after averaging 17.8 point per game as a sophomore last year.

In addition to the returnees, Terry has signed six additional players as part of his 2012 recruiting class to join the Bulldogs as they move into the Mountain West Conference next season.
