Big Week as `Dogs Face Rebels and Tigers
The Fresno State Bulldogs continue a big stretch by hosting UNLV on Wednesday (Dec. 3) and traveling north on Highway 99 to visit the Pacific Tigers, a team they have played more than any other opponent, as part of a men's/women's doubleheader in Stockton, Calif. for the 7:30 p.m. Saturday night event on Dec. 6. The UNLV game is part of the 2008 Papé Slam.
About the Rebels
UNLV (the University of Nevada, Las Vegas) is 5-2 on the season and recently hosted the Global Sports Classic where senior forward Joe Darger earned a spot on the all-tournament team. Senior guard Wink Adams, the 2008 Mountain West Conference Tournament MVP, has paced the team with 13.7 points, five rebounds and just over three assists per game. Fifth-year head coach Lon Kruger has guided the Rebels to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances, including a Sweet 16 slot in 2007 as well as falling to eventual national champion Kansas in the second round last year.
Against the Rebels
Fresno State trails the overall series with UNLV, 26-6. The `Dogs picked up a win in the last meeting between the squads in Fresno, Calif. back on Jan. 20, 1997, when the schools both played in the Western Athletic Conference. The Rebls have won the past three contests with the last contest coming last season on Dec. 8, 2008 by a score of 84-71 in a non-conference game in Las Vegas, Nev.
About the Tigers
The University of Pacific is 2-2 and most recently fell on the road at Washington by a tally of 72-54. Head Coach Bob Thomason is in his 22nd year at the helm of the Tigers men's basketball program and has sported a 343-250 record during his tenture at his alma mater. Senior forward Anthony Brown has led Pacific with 11.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per contest this season. The Tigers finished with a 21-10 record in 2007-08.
Against the Tigers
Fresno State trails the overall series with Pacific, 77-73. This marks the 151st meeting as the `Dogs have played the Tigers more than any other school. The longtime rivalry has seen Fresno State win six of the past eight contests including the most recent meeting last year on Dec. 22, 2008 when the `Dogs won 75-58. However, Fresno is looking for their first victory in Stockton since 2003.
