Coaching Career:
In his 10th season overseeing the defensive backs and his third season as the defensive coordinator ... in four of the last six seasons, Fresno State's defense has been atop the WAC and been one of the nation's best in pass efficiency defense ... with a habit of developing great players in the secondary, Stewart coached All-WAC second-team pick Moses Harris in 2008, both Harris and Lorne Bell were second-team All-WAC in 2009 and in 2010, Desia Dunn earned second-team All-WAC honors ... with his help, the defense in 2010 was second in the WAC in pass defense limiting opponents to 208.77 yards in the air ... had a shutout in his first game as defensive coordinator vs. UC Davis and two Bulldogs, end Chris Carter and linebacker Ben Jacobs were selected first-team All-WAC while Carter was named the WAC Defensive Player of the Year ... the Bulldog pass defense ranked No. 32 in the nation at 199.62 yards a game ... the Dogs ranked third in the WAC for pass defense in 2007, was fourth in the conference and 24th in the nation for passing efficiency ... in 2006, the Bulldogs' Josh Sherley was named second-team All-WAC, while senior Marcus McCauley was drafted in the third round, 72nd overall by the Minnesota Vikings ... in 2005, three of Fresno State's starters in the secondary were either first or second-team All-WAC ... coached first-team All-WAC safety Tyrone Culver, marking the fourth-straight season a Bulldog safety earned such honors ... cornerbacks Richard Marshall and Marcus McCauley were each second-team All-WAC in 2005 ... led a secondary that allowed a WAC-low 15 touchdown passes ... had four players taken in the NFL Draft over a three year span, three of whom start for their teams (Marcus McCauley, James Sanders, Richard Marshall and Tyrone Culver) ... Fresno State's secondary was one of the nation's best in 2004, as the Bulldogs ranked third in the nation in pass efficiency defense while allowing just nine touchdown passes all season, the fifth-lowest total in the nation ... the Bulldogs led the WAC in scoring defense, pass defense, turnover margin and total defense while playing in one of the highest producing offensive conferences in the nation ... junior James Sanders was selected first-team All-WAC for the second straight season ... sophomore cornerback Richard Marshall was selected second team and junior Tyrone Culver was tabbed honorable mention All-WAC ... eight different Bulldog defensive backs had interceptions and three returned them for touchdowns ... in 2003, he guided a much-improved Fresno State secondary that by the end of the year was one of the best in the WAC ... his unit recorded 16 interceptions, the third-highest in the conference ... after finishing the 2002 season thin at safety and defensive back, the Bulldogs were deep with strong, young playmakers such as Awan Diles, Raymond Washington, Tyrone Culver, James Sanders and Richard Marshall ... all but Washington, who was injured for half of 2003, contributed significantly ... under Stewart, Fresno State ranked second in the WAC in 2003 in pass defense, allowing only 214.9 yards per game ... Sanders flourished under Stewart, earning first-team All-WAC honors after being selected second team all-league as a freshman in 2002... in his first year, Stewart turned Cameron Worrell from a walk-on to an All-WAC performer, who spent time in the NFL with the Chicago Bears ... worked with a young group that overcame multiple injuries, including one to starting cornerback Kendall Edwards ... he has also helped develop Marcus McCauley, Marshall, Culver, Diles and Washington, who help comprised one of the deepest secondaries in the league ... came to Fresno State from the University of California, where he served as the Golden Bears' defensive backs coach and recruiting coordinator for five years ... helped guide such players as Marquis Smith, a third round draft choice of the Cleveland Browns in 1999, and Deltha O'Neal, a first round draft pick of the Denver Broncos in 2000 ... under Stewart, California led the Pac-10 in defense in 1999 ... his recruiting prowess helped gain Cal the addition of quarterback Kyle Boller ... became the Bears' recruiting coordinator in 2000 ... joined the coaching ranks in 1980 at Boise State, where he served as special teams coach for two years ... in 1982, he became the Broncos' wide receivers coach ... moved to Cal Poly in 1987 and served as the Mustangs' linebackers and special teams coach, then as the school's secondary and special teams coach from 1988-91 ... moved to Nevada in 1992, where he coached the defensive backs for the Wolf Pack ... spent two years at Nevada, where he had two players - Forey Duckett and Brock Marion - drafted in the NFL ... moved to UNLV for the 1994-96 seasons, during which he served as the Rebels' secondary coach ... he helped the program to their first bowl berth in 11 years when UNLV won the 1994 Big West crown.

Athletics Career:
An all-conference cornerback at Moorpark (Calif.) Junior College ... was all-conference at Moorpark ... also played at Boise State, leading his team in interceptions as a senior.

Born July 17, 1958 ... he and his wife, Pati, have three children, Carly, Jason and Taylor and have two grandchildren, Chloe and Channing.
