FRESNO, Calif. - Ryan Mathews ran for 233 yards and one touchdown while Ryan Colburn threw two touchdown passes as Fresno State defeated San Jose State 41-21 on Saturday night in front of a crowd of 35,495 fans at Bulldog Stadium on Homecoming Night.
Mathews' night, which ended after three quarters, included a 59-yard touchdown that highlighted the Bulldogs' 24-point second quarter. It was the junior's sixth straight game with 100 or more yards., setting a new school record. The previous record was held by Wendell Mathis in 2005 with five straight 100 yard games.
Senior running back Lonyae Miller contributed 49 yards on seven carries and freshman Robbie Rouse added 32 yards on seven carries. As a whole, Fresno State gained 302 yards on the ground on 43 carries.
The Bulldogs were also efficient through the air. Colburn completed 7-fo-12 passes for 117 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. Senior wideout Seyi Ajirotutu led Fresno State with four receptions for 61 yards on the night. Fellow Bulldog receiver Marlon Moore caught two passes for 27 yards, both of which were touchdowns.
Sophomore kicker Kevin Goessling was perfect on the night with two field goals of 40 yards or more (40, 46) and 5-for-5 on PATs.
Fresno State (3-3, 2-1 Western Athletic Conference) scored 34 unanswered points after San Jose State (1-5, 0-2) took an early 14-7 lead. The Bulldogs tied the game at 14 on a Rouse three-yard run and took the lead for good on a Moore 23-yard reception 5:21 left in the first half. The Bulldogs led 31-14 at halftime. The 31 points was the second most points scored in the first half this season. The Dogs scored 35 in the season opener against UC Davis.
Defensively the Bulldogs bottled up the Spartans top receiver Kevin Jurovich, limiting him to just one catch on the night for 13 yards.
Lamon Muldrow had 73 rushing yards for the Spartans, and quarterback Jordan La Secla completed 17 of 27 passes for 143 yards and a touchdown.
