Score By Quarters Bowling Green 14 7 0 7 - 28 Fresno State 7 7 0 7 - 21FRESNO, Calif. - Bowling Green ended Fresno State's hope for a fourth California Raisin Bowl championship since 1982 on Bowling Green's 3-yard line, holding on for a 28-21 victory over the Bulldogs before a record bowl crowd of 34,877.
The Bulldogs, the Big West Conference champions who ended their season with a 10-2 record, needed to drive 99 yards inside the final three minutes for the game-tying touchdown. Behind senior quarterbak Mark Barsotti, who was playing for the first time since breaking his leg on Oct. 19, Fresno State set up on Bowling Green's 3-yard line with 19 seconds to play. The Falcon defense played tight forcing Barsotti into three consecutive incomplete passes preserving the Bowling Green win.
Fresno State never ceased the relentless Bulldog attack entering the game as a two-touchdown favorite. The Falcons bolted out to leads of 14-0, 21-7 and 28-14 behind the passing combinations of quarterback Erik White and receiver Mark Szlachcic.
The Bulldogs cut the spread to 28-21 on a Barsotti TD pass to tight end Marty Thompson, then once again put themselves in position for the final drive on the Bowling Green 3-yard line after cornerback Tony Brown intercepted a White pass at the Fresno state 1-yard line.
The Bulldogs out-gained the Falcons 484-383, but the 'Dogs were constantly set back by costly penalties. Fresno State was flagged 11 times totaling 86 lost yards.
