March 6, 2000

FRESNO, Calif. - One of Fresno State's most decorated football players returns to the Bulldog program as an assistant coach. J.D. Williams was hired today as the linebackers coach according head coach Pat Hill. Williams replaced Ken Greene, who left to take an assistant coaching position at Purdue.

"J.D. Williams is a bright young coach who has been a part of the Bulldog program as an outstanding player and a coach," said Hill. "He understands our tradition because he is a big part of if. It's always great when you can bring back a former outstanding player to the program. As a coach, J.D. is really growing and learning. It's a great addition for us."

Williams was the first Bulldog ever drafted in the first round of the NFL draft, chosen as the 16th overall pick by the Buffalo Bills in 1990. He enjoyed a stellar career in the NFL, selected to the NFL All-Rookie team in 1990 and appeared in four Super Bowls with the Bills. He played for the Arizona Cardinals in 1994, the Carolina Panthers in 1995 and the San Francisco 49ers in 1996. He was a two-time All-Big West Conference selection at cornerback. He was a second-team All-America by The Sporting News after his senior season. He set Fresno State records for blocked kicks in a season (six) and career (nine) and was named the Defensive MVP of the 1990 East-West Shrine All-Star Game.

He earned two letters on the track & field team, and won the 1986 PCAA triple jump championship (52-11). He placed 15th at the NCAA championships in the triple jump. Williams also ran a leg on the conference championship 400-meter relay team that set a school record of 40.18.

Williams, 32, began his coaching career in 1997 at Fresno State as a graduate assistant coach on Pat Hill's inaugural staff. The following season he became a full-time assistant at Cal Poly as defensive backfield coach. In 1999, he joined the staff at San Jose State as secondary coach.

Williams has two daughters Nicole and Kyra. He is a 1990 graduate of Fresno State with a degree in criminology.

The addition of Williams completes the football staff for the year 2000.

"I feel with the additions of Tim Simons, Kerry Locklin and now J.D. Williams, we have put together the best staff since I have been here," Hill said.
