FRESNO, Calif. - Pat Hill has stressed a sense of urgency with his football team in spring drills. The fourth-year head coach takes his Bulldogs through their second full week of practice this week, which culminates with a scrimmage at Bakersfield High School at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

"We have a very difficult season opener at Ohio State and our players need to understand what they do now during spring drills will help them get ready for that game on Sept. 2," Hill said. "Aside from some injuries, we have had some very good and competitive workouts. We need to continue to improve in several areas, but we have good competition at a lot of positions."

Devon Banks will miss the remainder of spring practice after suffering a broken nose in last week's scrimmage. Tackle Joe Schey (foot), Paris Gaines (knee) and Akka-Ar Moses (foot) are not participating in spring practices but will return for fall camp.

Saturday's scrimmage, the mid-point of spring drills, will be approximately 60 plays. Several current Bulldogs will be returning to their hometown, including projected starting quarterback David Carr, a redshirt junior who starred at Stockdale High School. Other Bakersfield players include Bryce McGill, Justin Woltz, Jason Stewart, Tim Osborne and Rodney Wright.

Fresno State's third scrimmage will be held at the Bulldog Practice Facility April 8. Spring drills conclude April 14 with the annual spring game in Bulldog Stadium at 6 p.m.

The Bulldogs, who are coming off an 8-5 record and WAC title, kickoff their 2000 season at Ohio State on Sept. 2. The home opener is Sept. 23 vs. Cal.
