FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State football team is through spring football and currently in its post-spring workout period. Here is some news and notes, along with the 2013 summer prospectus, keeping Bulldog fans updated with the Fresno State football team.
Fresno State worked through its 15-allotted spring practice sessions that wrapped up on Saturday, March 23 with the spring game. Following the conclusion of spring football, the coaching staff released the post-spring depth chart that can be found in the 2013 summer prospectus link at the top of the page.
You'll see a lot of "OR's" listed on the depth chart, indicating that position battles were not won during spring camp and the starting spots remain open heading into the fall. (Note: the depth chart only includes players that participated in spring ball, any incoming freshmen or transfers that were a part of the 2013 recruiting class are not listed at this time.)
Another thing you'll notice on the depth chart is Greg Watson's name listed three times on offense. Watson, who was the back-up quarterback in 2012, permanently switched from QB to wide receiver before the Bulldogs' appearance in the Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl. He did not practice with the quarterbacks in spring football and the back-up competition is expected to ensue during fall camp between Marcus McDade, Myles Carr, Brian Burrell and Zack Greenlee.

After a week off for spring break, the Bulldogs began their six-week workout period on April 2 that will run up until finals week in mid-May. The workouts run by strength and conditioning coach Joey Boese will be broken up into the individual position groups, but the main emphasis of this spring workout period is elevating the strength and speed levels of the team.
"Right now we want to make our biggest strength gains to date because we've got a concentrated six-week period," head coach Tim DeRuyter said. "We'll run two days a week trying to get our speed better by getting explosive burst and speed work in, but also we're doing four days of heavy lifting."
Senior quarterback Derek Carr will throw out the first pitch at Thursday's Fresno Grizzlies game on opening day. The Grizzlies open up the 2013 season against the Tacoma Rainiers.
Two contracts with future football opponents are finalized - one is a single-game contract with Abilene Christian set to visit Bulldog Stadium on Sept. 5, 2015 and the other a home-and-home series with Utah. The Bulldogs will play at Utah on Sept. 6, 2014 and the Utes will make a return trip to Fresno the next year on Sept. 19, 2015.
Next Monday, April, 8, the Fresno State Quarterback Club of the Bulldog Foundation is hosting its annual golf tournament at Copper River Country Club. Click here for more information on how you can participate in that.
Beginning April 15, Fresno State assistant coaches will be out on the road recruiting, looking for student-athletes that will be a part of the 2014 recruiting class.
It is well known that strong safety Phillip Thomas led the nation in interceptions last year with eight picks. Now, Thomas is on his way to the NFL after becoming the first unanimous All-American in school history. What might not be as well known is that two other Bulldogs returning in 2013 to lead the secondary also ranked highly nationally in interceptions.
Free safety Derron Smith tied for fifth nationally with six interceptions and cornerback Sean Alston tied for 11th in the FBS with five picks. Those two combined for 11 interceptions. No other two players from the same team that will return in 2013 combined for more interceptions than Alston and Smith had last year.
