FRESNO, Calif. - The 2014 NFL Draft is 15 days away and for a number of former Bulldogs there has been lots of hard work put in from the end of the 2013 season to now as they look for a shot to further their playing careers in the National Football League.
Fresno State has had 100 players selected in the NFL Draft. With another group of Bulldogs hoping to hear their names called in this May's draft, GoBulldogs.com over the coming weeks will highlight former 'Dogs on their 'Road to the NFL.'
Volume 2 features offensive lineman Austin Wentworth.
Wentworth in 2013 became the first offensive lineman in eight years to garner All-America accolades, as he was named by Sports Illustrated to its honorable mention All-America team after his stellar senior season. Wentworth was the anchor of the Fresno State offensive line, who helped the Bulldogs set 19 offensive school records last season.
He played in 48 games and made 43 career starts, including starting in 42 consecutive games to close out his career. Wentworth brings a lot of versatility to whatever NFL club may choose to pick him up, as he started at guard his sophomore season before moving to left tackle for his junior and senior seasons.
Wentworth collected first-team All-Mountain West accolades both of those seasons playing at left tackle. His senior year, he and the rest of the Bulldog offensive line protected for the unit that led the nation in passing (394.8 ypg), ranked third in total offense (547.8 ypg) and was sixth in scoring (43.4 ppg).
He and the rest of his offensive line only allowed 11 sacks in 13 games, a figure that tied for the sixth-fewest sacks allowed in the FBS last year. What makes that sack total so impressive is that Fresno State did so while throwing the ball 675 times, which was 246 more pass attempts than any other of the teams ranked head of the 'Dogs in fewest sacks allowed.
The 2014 NFL Draft runs May 8-10, with the first round taking place on Thursday, May 8, followed by the second and third rounds on Friday, May 9. Rounds 4-7 will be held on Saturday, May 10.
