FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State wide receiver Davante Adams, quarterback Derek Carr and safety Derron Smith were named Wednesday to the 2013 Detmer Award Preseason Watch List, as announced by the website SaturdayBlitz.com.
The Detmer Award, which originated in 2011, honors the best individual performer from the non-Bowl Championship Series conferences. There were 32 total players named to the preseason watch list Wednesday.
Carr, who finished third in the 2012 Detmer Award voting behind winner Jordan Lynch of Northern Illinois and Colby Cameron of Louisiana Tech, is one of 16 quarterbacks on this year's watch list. The 2012 Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year threw for 4,104 yards and 37 touchdowns against seven interceptions as a junior last season.
Adams and BYU's Cody Hoffman are the only two wide receivers on the preseason watch list. Adams was an honorable mention All-American of Sports Illustrated last season and the 2012 MW Freshman of the Year. He had a monster campaign as a redshirt freshman, catching 102 passes for 1,312 yards and 14 touchdowns.
Smith is one of four defensive players and the only defensive back on the preseason watch list. In 2012 his six interceptions tied for the fifth-most in the FBS and helped Fresno State as a team rank No. 3 nationally with 22 picks. Smith was second on the team with 79 tackles and he helped the Bulldogs rank No. 2 nationally in pass defense, giving up only 167.15 yards per game through the air.
In all there were 10 Mountain West players selected to the preseason watch list. The other Mountain West representatives joining the three Bulldogs on the list were:
Cody Fajardo, QB, Nevada
David Fales, QB, San Jose State
Chuckie Keeton, QB, Utah State
Demarcus Lawrence, DE, Boise State
Adam Muema, RB, San Diego State
Brett Smith, QB, Wyoming
Joe Southwick, QB, Boise State
