Bulldog Stadium Gets Turf Makeover
June 3, 2011
FRESNO, Calif. - Bulldog Stadium will have a new playing surface beginning with the fall of 2011. The Athletics Department announced today that plans are moving forward to install FieldTurf into the facility, which has had natural grass since its construction in 1980.
The project will officially begin on Monday, June 6, when construction workers will begin preparing the stadium for the installation. The first step will be removing the current playing surface and existing crown that runs down the middle of the field. The new turf will be installed and finished in August, allowing the Bulldog football team a few weeks to practice prior to the home opener on Sept. 17 against North Dakota.
The cost of the project is approximately $1.2 million and will be funded through donations to the Bulldog Foundation, the fundraising arm of the department of athletics. No state funds are being used for the project.
Several factors have driven the need for the new turf including and most paramount a safer, more consistent playing surface for Bulldog games.
Late last season when winter rains saturated the field, specifically the Idaho and Illinois games, the field conditions were very slick. The new surface will be able to better withstand a variety of weather conditions. This past spring the Bulldog football team had to curtail its activities when heavy rains flooded the practice fields making them unusable. FieldTurf will also provide a safe and functioning year-round training venue for all Fresno State student-athletes.
FieldTurf will require less annual and daily maintenance.
The vast majority of the schools in the WAC and Mountain West Conference have previously installed artificial surfaces for their stadiums.
