FRESNO, Calif. - The 940 AM ESPN Radio and Paul Evert's RV Country Bulldog Express sparked excitement with Fresno State fans this week as head coach Tim DeRuyter shared his passion and vision with the Red Wave.
The Bulldog Express, which put on close to 1,000 miles on Paul Evert's RV this week, concluded Friday with stops in the morning at the Madera Auto Center and Fashion Furniture and Buffalo Wild Wings in Fresno during the afternoon.
"To see how much of a fever pitch the Red Wave has for the 'Dogs has really been fun for me," DeRuyter said.
DeRuyter spent the morning greeting fans at the Madera Auto Center from 9-11 a.m. There he met with Madera Mayor Rob Poythress and reflected on his first season at Fresno State with the crowd.
"It's a much slower process, a year ago it was like taking a sip out of a fire hydrant," DeRuyter said referring to how quickly his first season on the job passed. "Our players know what's expected of them now, I know as a head coach much better now what our staff needs to do and I think we'll make a quantum leap this year. We're excited about the possibilities."
Following his stop there, the Bulldog Express was off to Fashion Furniture for the 940 AM ESPN Radio Sports Zone to join Paul Loeffler and Cameron Worrell on the air. With Loeffler and Worrell, DeRuyter talked about the offseason and shared his thoughts on what he thinks his 2013 team can accomplish.
"Fun is spelled W-I-N," he told 940 AM ESPN radio as he looks to improve off of last season's team that went 9-4 and won a share of the Mountain West Championship.
While at Buffalo Wild Wings, the last stop Friday, incoming Fresno State President Dr. Joseph Castro and retiring president Dr. John Welty greeted DeRuyter, the Bulldog Express and the Fresno State fans in attendance.
"This afternoon was a treat getting the chance to meet Dr. Castro for the first time," DeRuyter said. "Any chance I get to meet with Dr. Welty, he's been such a great supporter of our athletics program. He's the first president that hired me as a head coach, so he's always going to have a special place in my heart."
Also joining the crew at Buffalo Wild Wings was head men's basketball coach Rodney Terry, head women's basketball coach Raegan Pebley, Director of Athletics Thomas Boeh and a number of other coaches and administrators mingling with the fans.
Overall the week on the road for the Bulldog Express was a success and it was great for DeRuyter to experience the fervor the Valley has for the 'Dogs.
On Saturday, DeRuyter and his coaching staff will be at KRC Safety in Visalia for the South Valley Quarterback Club Dinner and Auction to benefit Bulldog Football.
