CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Fresno State junior free safety Derron Smith has been named to the 2013 College Football Performance Awards Defensive Back Trophy Watch List, the CFPA announced Monday.
This is the second preseason award watch list that Smith has been named to. Back in mid-May he was one of 42 student-athletes named to the preseason Lott IMPACT Trophy watch list.
Smith was a first-team All-Mountain West selection in 2012 when he was second on the team with 79 tackles and six interceptions. His six picks had him tied for the fifth-most among all players in the FBS.
He helped lead the Bulldog secondary that ranked No. 2 nationally in pass defense by allowing only 167.15 passing yards per game. Fresno State also ranked No. 3 in the FBS in team interceptions (22), No. 4 in pass efficiency defense (100.75) and No. 5 in both opponent completion percentage (.514) and total turnovers gained (35) with Smith starting every game last season for the 'Dogs.
All CFPA recipients are selected exclusively based upon objective scientific rankings of the extent to which individual players increase the overall effectiveness of their teams. All players are eligible for awards at their respective positions; players are not preemptively eliminated from consideration.
The full list of 2013 CFPA recipients will be announced on January 8, 2014.
