FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State head coach Tim DeRuyter announced Wednesday that two junior college transfers have joined the Bulldog program.
Defensive back Theo Chambers from Cerritos College and safety Donnell Vercher from Fresno City College have both signed financial aid agreements to play for the Bulldogs and attend school at Fresno State.
Vercher is a hometown product out of Clovis (Clovis HS) and was a junior college All-American last season at nearby Fresno City College. The 6-2, 200-pounder picked off eight passes as a sophomore in 2012 and had 23 tackles.
In high school, Vercher was named the 2010 Tri-River Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year after recording 112 tackles as a senior. He picked off three passes that season, forced six fumbles, recovered four fumbles and blocked three kicks.
Chambers (6-0, 180) recorded 37 tackles in seven games as a sophomore last season at Cerritos College where he was coached by his father, Jim, in the secondary. As a freshman, he posted 27 tackles, three pass breakups and forced one fumble.
Chambers attended Mayfair High School in Lakewood, Calif. where he was a three-time All-Suburban League selection and two-time All-Area pick.
The Bulldogs report for fall camp on Aug. 1 to begin preparations for the 2013 season. Fresno State opens the year on Aug. 29 with a 7 p.m. kickoff at home against Rutgers.
