FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State free safety Derron Smith was selected as a third-team preseason All-American by Athlon Sports on Monday, marking the third preseason All-America team he has been selected to.
Smith was previously selected a third-team preseason All-America by Phil Steele and was also tabbed to Lindy's Sports second-team.
He is the only defensive player that is not from one of the Power 5 conferences (ACC, Big 12, Big Ten, Pac-12 and SEC) or Notre Dame to make Athlon's preseason All-America teams.
The Banning, Calif. native enters his senior season as the nation's active leader in career interceptions with 14. He has 211 career tackles, 11.0 tackles for a loss, four sacks and two forced fumbles while playing in 42 career games and making 30 starts.
Smith is a two-time first-team All-Mountain West selection and was the defensive MVP of the 2013 Mountain West championship game.
He is coming off the 2013 season in which he was tied for second nationally with seven interceptions and tied for second on the team with 87 tackles. In 2012 as a redshirt sophomore, Smith picked off six passes to rank in a tie for fifth in the FBS.
