Davidson, N.C. - Officials at the College Football Performance Awards announced on Monday that Derron Smith was one of 42 players to be named to its watch list for the 2014 Defensive Back of the Year Trophy.

Smith enters the 2014 season as the nation's active leader in career interceptions with 14 and a host of accolades to match the success on the field. The soon-to-be senior is a two-time First-Team All-Mountain West selection as a sophomore and junior, and was the defensive MVP of the 2013 Mountain West Championship game.

The Banning, Calif. native also owns three All-America preseason honors leading up to his senior campaign - Lindy's Second-Team, Athlon Sports Third-Team and Phil Steele Third-Team.

He is coming off the 2013 season in which he was tied for second nationally with seven interceptions and tied for second on the team with 87 tackles. In 2012 as a redshirt sophomore, Smith picked off six passes to rank in a tie for fifth in the FBS.

The CFPA enters its seventh season of player and team performance recognition, Fresno State has had two of its players earn an honor in back-to-back years - Phillip Thomas (2012 Defensive Back Trophy) and Derek Carr (2013 Elite Quarterback Trophy).
