DALLAS, Texas - Fresno State left tackle Austin Wentworth was named to the 2013 Outland Trophy Watch List, announced Thursday by the Football Writers Association of America.
Wentworth, a 6-5, 306-pound senior, is one of 75 players and four from the Mountain West on the preseason watch list for the award that honors the best interior lineman in college football.
Wentworth enters his senior season having made 30 career starts, including 28 consecutive. He is one of 60 active players in the FBS that has started in 30 or more games and one of eight that play in the Mountain West.
Last season he collected first-team All-Mountain West accolades after helping direct the Bulldog offense that led the conference in scoring and passing. Fresno State averaged 37.9 points per game last season to rank 17th nationally and it also ranked in the top 20 in passing offense (12th) and total offense (16th) behind Wentworth and the offensive line.
Wentworth has blocked for two of the all-time leaders in the Bulldog record books. He helped running back Robbie Rouse become the school's all-time leading rusher last season, as Rouse finished his career with 4,647 yards and 21 100-yard rushing games.
Last season, Wentworth helped quarterback Derek Carr throw for a Mountain West record 4,104 passing yards and Carr has become the most accurate passer in school history behind a solid line anchored by Wentworth.
The Outland Trophy winner is chosen from three finalists who are part of the FWAA All-America Team. The FWAA All-America Committee, after voting input from the entire membership, selects the 25-man team and eventually the three Outland finalists. Committee members, then by individual ballot, select the winner. Only interior linemen on offense or defense are eligible for the award; ends are not eligible.
The list will be trimmed to six or seven semifinalists on Nov. 20. Five days later three Outland Trophy finalists will be named by the FWAA. The winner of the 68th Outland Trophy, named after the late John Outland, an All-America lineman at Penn at the turn of the 20th century, will be announced on ESPN on The Home Depot College Football Awards on Dec. 12 from Disney's Boardwalk in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
