DALLAS, Texas - Fresno State senior linebacker Travis Brown was named Thursday to the 2012 Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) and the Charlotte Touchdown Club.
Brown and San Diego State cornerback Leon McFadden were the only two players from the Mountain West to make the 84-man list. The Bronko Nagurski Trophy is awarded annually to the nation's best defensive player.
A 6-1, 236-pounder out of Fresno (Clovis West HS), Brown has played in all 39 Fresno State games over the past three seasons since arriving on campus as a true freshman in 2009. Brown is the Bulldogs' active leading tackler, as he has posted 189 tackles over the past three seasons with 19.5 tackles for a loss and five sacks.
Brown was a first-team All-WAC selection in 2011 after leading Fresno State with 85 tackles. He had 8.5 tackles for a loss, three sacks and broke up three passes a year ago.
As a sophomore in 2010, Brown was a second-team All-WAC selection when he was third on the team with 73 tackles.
Brown has twice been named the WAC Defensive Player of the Week in his career. He has started every game for the Bulldogs over the past two seasons.
The FWAA and the Charlotte Touchdown Club will announce five finalists for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy on Nov. 15.
The Bronko Nagurski Trophy winner is chosen from five finalists who are part of the FWAA All-America Team. The FWAA All-America Committee, after voting input from the entire membership, selects the 25-man team and eventually the Bronko Nagurski finalists. Committee members, then by individual ballot, select the winner, the best defensive player in America.
The annual Bronko Nagurski Trophy Banquet presented by ACN will be Dec. 3 at the Westin Hotel in Charlotte, N.C. Besides the 2012 winner being announced, the banquet will also celebrate the recipient of the Bronko Nagurski Legends Award presented by Florida East Coast Railway. Nebraska's Larry Jacobson, an end from the FWAA's 1971 All-American team, will be honored. Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly will be the keynote speaker at the banquet.
