NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Walter Camp Football Foundation announced Friday the names of 50 "players to watch" for its 2013 Player of the Year award and Fresno State senior quarterback Derek Carr was included on the prestigious list.
The Walter Camp Player of the Year award is the nation's fourth-oldest individual college football accolade.
Carr is coming off a 2012 season when he was named the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year and a honorable mention All-American by Sports Illustrated.
He threw for a league record 4,104 yards in 2012 had had 37 touchdowns against seven interceptions. His 37 touchdown passes from 2012 are tied for the most by a player returning this season.
Carr is the only returning quarterback in the FBS that has over 6,000 career passing yards, 50 or more career touchdown passes and less than 20 interceptions. No other QB meets all three categories.
He enters his senior season ranked third nationally in career TD passes and his career touchdown-to-interception ratio of 63-to-16 is the third-highest among all returning quarterbacks, trailing only Alabama's A.J. McCarron (49-to-8) and TCU's Casey Paschall (36-to-8).
Carr has thrown for 7,760 yards in his career and needs 3,049 yards during his senior season to break the school passing record that has stood since 1986. Carr has thrown for over 3,000 yards in each of the past two seasons, joining Trent Dilfer as the only quarterbacks in school history to accomplish the feat.
The watch list will be narrowed to 10 semi-finalists in mid-November. The 2013 Walter Camp Player of the Year recipient, which is voted on by the 125 NCAA Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors, will be announced live on ESPN SportsCenter on Thursday, December 12. The winner will then receive his trophy at the Foundation's annual national awards banquet on January 11, 2014 at the Yale University Commons in New Haven.
Other national awards that Carr is on the watch list for include the Maxwell Award, the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award, the CFPA Quarterback Trophy and the Heisman Pundit Watch List.
