FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State is headed to The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas for the 2013 Mountain West Football Media Days, which run July 22-23.
Entering their second season in the Mountain West, second-year Bulldog coach Tim DeRuyter along with quarterback Derek Carr and free safety Derron Smith will be joining their conference brethren in Las Vegas to preview the upcoming 2013 season.
The Bulldogs return 15 starters and 36 lettermen to its 2013 roster, which features a wealth of talent and added depth from what DeRuyter and his staff featured when he first took over the program a year ago. Headlining the 18-man senior class is Carr and left tackle Austin Wentworth, who are two of five returning players that earned first-team All-MW accolades a season ago. Wide receiver Isaiah Burse, defensive end Andy Jennings, tight end Marcel Jensen and cornerback L.J. Jones are also apart of this senior class returning off an all-conference season and the group collectively looks to lead the Bulldogs to another MW Championship - this time an outright title as the league features a conference championship game to be played on Dec. 7 between the winners of the Mountain and West Divisions.
Fresno State is coming off a 9-4 season in 2012 when it went 7-1 in its first year of Mountain West play, capturing a share of the league title along with Boise State and San Diego State. It was Fresno State's first conference championship since 1999.
Quarterback Derek Carr, the 2012 Mountain West Player of the Year and a honorable mention All-America pick by Sports Illustrated, returns for his senior season. He only needs 3,049 passing yards to break Kevin Sweeney's career school passing record that has stood since 1986. Carr threw for a Mountain West record 4,104 yards last season.
The Bulldogs return 15 starters (seven on offense, eight on defense), including 10 that received either first-, second- or honorable mention All-Mountain West accolades in 2012.
