LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Former Fresno State quarterback Derek Carr was named Tuesday as the recipient of the 2013-14 Mountain West Male Athlete of the Year award, announced here at the 2014 MW Football Media Days by Commissioner Craig Thompson.
Established by the Mountain West Joint Council in May 2010, the MW Athlete of the Year Awards are bestowed annually to one male and one female student-athlete who have achieved athletic excellence during the past academic year. In addition to superior athletic achievement, criterion for the MW Athlete of the Year Award requires that nominees be in good academic standing throughout their season of competition, and demonstrate good character and conduct on and off the playing field. The MW Female Athlete of the Year went to current Boise State cross country/track and field student-athlete Emma Bates.
"It is a huge blessing and honor to represent Fresno State and the Mountain West," said Carr, who becomes the first Bulldog to be named a Mountain West Athlete of the Year since the `Dogs joined the conference in 2012. "I'm very thankful to receive this honor and I could not have done it alone."
Carr, who was selected with the 36th overall pick (No. 4 in the second round) in the 2014 NFL Draft by the Oakland Raiders, was named the 2013 Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year. He became just the fourth quarterback in Football Bowl Subdivision history to throw for over 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns in a season. In addition, Carr established 27 new MW single-season or single-game records in 2013.
Under Carr's guidance, the Bulldogs won the Conference's West Division title and went on to defeat Utah State 24-17 in the inaugural MW Football Championship Game, in which Carr was selected as the game's Offensive Most Valuable Player.
Carr's postseason accolades were numerous, including being named to the All-Mountain West first-team and winning the 2013 Sammy Baugh Award as the nation's top passer.
