FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State and Brigham Young University football programs have agreed to a home-and-home series, Fresno State Director of Athletics Thomas Boeh announced Wednesday.
Fresno State will travel to Provo, Utah to face the Cougars on Nov. 21, 2015 and BYU will make the return trip to Bulldog Stadium on Nov. 4, 2017.
Fresno State and BYU have met nine times before, the last coming in 1998 when both schools were members of the WAC. The Bulldogs lead the all-time series with the Cougars 9-5, winning 3-of-5 at home and going 2-2 against them on the road.
The 'Dogs and Cougars where both members of the WAC from 1992-98. In that span they met five times and BYU won three of those games.
Fresno State took the last meeting of the series back in 1998, defeating BYU 31-21. The Bulldogs held a 24-21 lead going into the fourth quarter of that game when Billy Volek connected with Rodney Wright on a 39-yard touchdown pass with 8:52 remaining in the game to seal the victory. The Bulldogs held BYU without a point in the fourth quarter of that game.
The very first meeting of the series was on Sept. 22, 1956 in Provo when the Bulldogs won 26-13.
BYU was founded in 1875 and played its first season of intercollegiate football in 1922. The Cougars are independent in football and have appeared in 30 bowl games. BYU has been ranked in the Top 25 during seven of eight seasons under head coach Bronco Mendenhall.
