FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State football team took the field Monday morning to start its third week of fall camp. As the 'Dogs inch closer to their season opener versus Rutgers on Aug. 29, the team honed in on situational drills Monday before digging deep into Rutgers prep later this week.

"When you go through situations of the game, the more times you can do that and practice with a purpose where guys know the situation, I think it helps you," DeRuyter said.

The 'Dogs implemented their scout team against the ones in an eight-minute scrimmage in their situational drill. Coaches gave the ball to the first team offense down by 10 points, while the first-team defense was asked to make stops against the scout offense.

Both first teams looked sharp as the offense led by Derek Carr marched down the field, once from its own 35 and secondly from its own 42, for two consecutive scores. Carr went 6-for-6 with one TD, including a one-handed grab by Davante Adams in the back corner of the end zone from 12-yards out. The defense followed-up by forcing consecutive three-and-outs.

The offensive line continues to show improvement as the first five were intact for a second week in row. Alex Fifita continued to see work at the left guard position with the first-team offensive line.

"Those guys have been working their tails off," said Carr. "Coach Norcross really gets after them and they are really tired after practice. We know what we have to do as a team and they know what they have to do to help us win so we're looking forward to seeing how great they do this year."

The Bulldogs will start their weekly routine in preparation for Rutgers this Wednesday due to the Thursday night kickoff on the 29th, but Carr has already been doing his homework.

"They're very physical," Carr said. "A physical team that likes to get after the quarterback, they like to show disguises in coverage and things like that so I am looking forward to the challenge. They are very talented so it'll be great for us to go out there and compete against them."

Austin Wentworth added, "We just need to get our Rutgers prep started. It's been a little here and there, but now we got to get into the thick of it and familiarize ourselves with their defense and blitzes."

The 'Dogs kickoff the 2013 season on Thursday Aug. 29 against Rutgers at 7:30 p.m.
