FRESNO, Calif. - With the Ohio State fight song blaring through speakers, the Fresno State football team went through its second to last scrimmage at Bulldog Stadium today. The Bulldogs open the season vs. Ohio State on Sept. 2.
Unlike the first full scrimmage, today's scrimmage feature big plays and was better executed according to head coach Pat Hill.
"This was a good scrimmage," Hill said following the nearly two-hour session. "We created some noise and atmosphere to give us the feel of a big game and I think the guys showed good concentration. We executed much better than we did last Sunday. We had some offensive lineman back in there and that gave David (Carr) some time to throw. We also were missing some defensive linemen, which was a factor. I'm happy with our conditioning. We didn't have any tired players out there afterward. That says a lot about how hard we have worked. Overall, we executed well and I was pleased with the scrimmage."
The battle for the kicking job continues to be tight. Freshman Brett Visintainer and junior Asen Asparuhov both kicked well in the scrimmage. Visintainer was 5-for-5 connecting from 42, 30, 19, 37 and 49 yards. Asparuhov was 4-for-5, making all of the same attempts except missing wide left on the 49-yard attempt. Each made one PAT.
Offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig welcomed back two linemen in left tackle Kevin Jordan (dehydration) and guard Mike Painchaud (dehydration). All-WAC receiver Rodney Wright missed the scrimmage with tendonitis in his knee. Tackle Alan Harper (eye), end Jason Stewart (hip) and cornerback Lawrence Deck (concussion) missed the scrimmage for the defense. Redshirt freshman Brian Morris, who was expected to replace injured Justin Johnson at defensive end, will miss the season with a knee injury.
Other highlights of the scrimmage include:
The Bulldogs' next scrimmage will be Saturday. They will begin implementing their game plan for Ohio State on Thursday.
"We still need to polish some things," Hill said. "This was a good scrimmage for us. I was happy with it."
