Aug. 30, 2001

On Thursday, Fresno State quarterback David Carr made a special visit to ESPN.com to chat about last week's win over Colorado and Sunday's game against Oregon State.

In the 24-22 win over Colorado, Carr was 21 of 36 passing for 198 yards and one touchdown and rushed for another TD.

Last year, Carr and the Bulldogs were 7-5 with Carr throwing for 2,338 yards and 18 touchdowns. He also ran for four more scores. The Bulldogs faced Air Force in the Silicon Valley Football Classic and he threw for a career-high 391 yards and five touchdowns.

If you missed Carr's Aug. 30 chat, an edited transcript follows:

David Carr: I am online and ready for your questions. Let's get started.

Fresno State Alum: Hey, David! Congratulations on a great win last week! What can Bulldog fans like myself expect from the team this week against OSU? GO DOGS!

David Carr: That we will play hard and we will be ready to play when we come down that ramp. Hopefully the fans will be ready for us.

OSU are a lot like us. The are fast, physical and smart. So hopefully we can matchup well with them.

Fresno: Did Coach Hill hold anything back from the playbook during the Colorado game knowing Oregon State would have the benefit of the game film while Fresno will not have any game film of the Beavers this season?

David Carr: The second half we did because we did have the lead and we just wanted to run the clock out while still moving them ball. So some of the plays might have looked a little vanilla.

Robin: Fresno: Do you feel the offense is sometimes too conservative?

David Carr: For my standpoint, yes just because I am the QB and I want to drop back and pass every down. But I know you can't do that when you are trying to win ball games.

David (Fresno): In a previous interview, you mentioned that the Bulldogs beat Colorado in your Playstation NCAA Football game when the computer simulated the game... what was the outcome when you simulated the game with Oregon State?

David Carr: Pretty much the same thing. It wasn't that big a blow out but it was physical and we scored a lot of points. I'll leave it at that.

Jonathan (denver): Where do you think you rank among the other QBs in teh nation??

David Carr: I got a chance this summer to go to a camp with other highly rated QBs. I thought I matched up well with them heading into the camp and felt even better afterwards.

Michael C. (Fresno, CA): Former Fresno State quarterbacks Trent Dilfer (Seahawks) and Billy Volek (Titans) had successful college careers that ultimately vaulted them to the next level, however, they both lost a bowl game in their final college games. Aside from an obvious bowl victory, what else would you like to accomplish to consider your college career successful?

David Carr: One thing that is a team goal and a personal goal is to win the WAC title and also win a bowl game. I want to go out with a good taste in my mouth.

Jeremy: Stamford Connecticut: David: I am a Fresno State fan living in Stamford Connecticut. I must say that I had the local bar of about twenty old school yankees cheering for the bulldogs. The bulldogs have won big games in the past but have failed to gain national exposure. What do you think is the key to staying in the national spotlight?

Best of luck to you in the future!

David Carr: Consistency. Coach Hill talks about it all the time. We have to win the big games every week. We can't just do it off and on. We have to go out and play our game against Oregon State and we should be OK.

Fresno Athey: I've heard talk from experts such as Mel Kiper, Jr. that you could be a first round draft pick after the Bulldogs season, had you ever thought about leaving Fresno State early this past offseason?

David Carr: I had the question brought up to me but I haven't accomplished everything I set out to do when I came here. I want to win that WAC title and win a bowl game. So it wasn't really a consideration.

bigbeav: what is the biggest challenge your team will present to the beavers this weekend?

David Carr: We just have to match up with their speed. They play great team defense and fly around the ball, a lot like our defense. It will help that we face that kind of defense every day in practice. So our biggest concern it matching up with their speed on the outside.

Chris (Ann Arbor, MI): Is playing these guys in their first game an advantage or a disadvantage, as you see it?

David Carr: I think it is a little bit of both. They will come in confident from last year. But so will we after beating Colorado. But I think the biggest adjustment comes between the first and second games so they don't have that luxury. We have made some adjustment and have a lot of confidence heading into this game.

David Carr: Unfortunately, I have to run to a team meeting so that is all the questions I can get to right now. Thanks for all the great questions and the support. I hope you will either watch us on ESPN or come out to the game this weekend.

Take care everyone.
