COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Fresno State senior Isaiah Burse was named Monday as the Mountain West Special Teams Player of the week, collecting the first MW weekly accolade in his career.
Burse was also tabbed as the national punt returner performer of the week by the College Football Performance Awards.
The accolades come in after Burse tied the school and Mountain West records by returning two punts for touchdowns in Fresno State's win over Cal Poly on Sept. 7.
His first punt return for a score was a 61-yarder in the first quarter. He added a 58-yard punt return for a TD with 30 seconds remaining in the first half. Burse joined Steve Smith from Utah in 1999 and Dallas Davis from Colorado State, also in 1999, as the only other players in Mountain West history to return two punts for touchdowns in the same game.
Clifton Smith against Weber State in 2005 is the only other Bulldog to return two punts for touchdowns in the same game. Smith's returns were of 92 and 84 yards.
For the game, Burse had three punt returns for 130 yards and 173 all-purpose yards in the win. He also caught a 15-yard touchdown pass in the first minute of the second quarter and finished with four receptions for 43 yards.
Burse is the nation's active leader in all-purpose yardage with 4,842 and he is closing in on become the third Bulldog in program history to gain 5,000 all-purpose yards. He is now 987 yards away from breaking Bernard Berrian's school record for career all-purpose yardage.
