FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State Director of Athletics Thomas Boeh announced Monday evening an agreement between the University of Southern California and Fresno State to open the 2014 football season at the Los Angeles Coliseum on Aug. 30.
The USC game, a rematch of the 2005 meeting when Fresno State took the No. 1-ranked Trojans to the wire, is one of four games added to the non-conference schedule over the next two seasons. Also scheduled are home games against Rutgers (2013) and Nebraska (2014) and a road contest at Colorado (2013).
"We expect that this announcement will be well received. The Fresno State fan base has desired this rematch for several years and we are very pleased to have the game included on the 2014 slate," Boeh said. "Contracting this game with USC reflects our continued commitment to maintain a non-conference schedule that is balanced, while including competition with the nation's elite programs."
Bulldog fans showed up in droves for that 2005 game at USC and they will have an opportunity to do so once again in 2014, as Fresno State has been allotted 8,000 tickets to sell. The revenue generated from those ticket sales will stay with Fresno State.

"I'm really excited about our 2013 schedule, opening at home against Rutgers and then playing a second-straight game in front of our fans," head coach Tim DeRuyter said. "There are some challenging games on our future schedules, but are ones that our fans can be excited about, including the USC game. Having the opportunity to bring BCS AQ teams into Bulldog Stadium is a big draw for both the fan base and for us in recruiting."
The 2014 opener at USC is the first meeting between the schools since the 2005 season when the Bulldogs nearly upset the No. 1 ranked Trojans that were led by Reggie Bush and Matt Leinart. Fresno State led USC 42-41 at the Los Angeles Coliseum with nine minutes to play before falling 50-42.
The Bulldogs open the 2013 season on Thursday, Aug. 29 at home against Rutgers and then host Cal Poly the following weekend on Sept. 7. The other non-conference game set in 2013 is at Colorado (Sept. 14). On Sept. 13, 2014, Nebraska makes its first-ever visit to Bulldog Stadium and it will be just the second-ever game played between the two schools.
Arrangements for other non-conference games in both 2013 and 2014 are not yet finalized.
