FRESNO, Calif. - With Saturday's Homecoming game against San Diego State, a number of distinguished Fresno State alumni will be in attendance at Bulldog Stadium.
Two of the top running backs in Fresno State history, Ron Rivers and Michael Pittman, will be serving as the honorary team captains for head coach Tim DeRuyter against the Aztecs. Rivers and Pittman, who both enjoyed lengthy NFL careers, will lead the team out onto the field at the start of the game and be recognized in the first quarter.
In addition to the two team captains, a large number of football alumni are expected back for the 'Bring It Home' Weekend. The Bulldog football alumni have a full weekend of activities planned, starting Friday night with the pre-Homecoming dinner in memory and honor of coach Dan Brown.
On Saturday, the former 'Dogs will be hosting a BBQ-Cook Off and an Alumni Pre-Game Tailgate at the ESPN Zone.
Then all former players will be recognized before the game and will form a tunnel for the team to run out onto the field.
In addition to the football alum, former Fresno State golfer and current PGA star Nick Watney is returning to campus this weekend.
Watney is being honored Friday night with the Outstanding Alumnus Award from the Fresno State Alumni Association. Watney, who finished in fourth place on the PGA Tour's FedEx Cup standings, will also be honored on the field at halftime with the other Top Dog Award winners.
He has won five PGA Tournaments, including the 2012 Barclays, this year. At Fresno State, Watney was a three-time All-American and three-time WAC Player of the Year. He won 10 collegiate tournaments and became the only golfer in WAC history to win the Joe Kearney Award as the top athlete in the conference.
Fresno State and San Diego State are set to kick off at 7 p.m. Saturday in what is the first-ever Mountain West league game for the Bulldogs.
