CLEVELAND, Ohio - Phil Steele publications released its midseason All-America teams Wednesday and Fresno State senior safety Phillip Thomas was selected to its second-team.
Thomas, who leads the nation in interceptions with six, was one of four Mountain West players selected to Steele's Midseason All-America teams. The three other Mountain West Players - Nevada running back Stefphon Jefferson, San Diego State cornerback Leon McFadden and New Mexico kickoff returner Chase Clayton - were all named to the fourth-team.
Thomas has led the rejuvenated Bulldog defense this year, as Fresno State as a team leads the country with 18 turnovers gained. Last year, a year that Thomas missed with a broken leg, the Bulldogs ranked dead last with nine take-aways and only had five interceptions total in 13 games.
Thomas now has six interceptions through six games, two of which he returned for touchdowns (both vs. Colorado on Sept. 15).
The senior from Bakersfield, Calif. has 39 tackles on the season with 4.0 tackles for a loss, two sacks and one fumble recovery. On both of his sacks - first at No. 4 Oregon and then at Colorado State last weekend - Thomas forced the quarterback to fumble and the Bulldogs recovered.
He has twice been named the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week this season.
Thomas leads Fresno State (4-2, 2-0 MW) into this weekend's bout with No. 24/22 Boise State in Boise, Idaho. The Bulldogs are looking to snap a six-game losing streak to the Broncos and improve to 3-0 in league play for the first time since 2007.
