FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State Alumni Association presented Kevin Sweeney, 1987 graduate, the award for Most Outstanding Alumnus for the Department of Athletics at the Top Dog Alumni Awards Gala on Friday night at the Save Mart Center.
The Distinguished Alumnus Awards honor former Fresno State students whose scholarship, leadership and service to the university, the central San Joaquin Valley and to California are exemplary.
Sweeney, now current senior vice president at Wells Fargo Bank, is a former Bulldogs quarterback and National Football League player.
While at Fresno State (1983-1986) Sweeney set the school's all-time passing mark with 10,808 yards, which set a new NCAA record when he graduated. In his four years leading the 'Dogs at quarterback, he guided his teams' to 32 wins, including an undefeated season (11-0-1) in 1985, his junior season. In that junior season he threw for a then school-record 3,259 yards and 20 touchdowns, which ranks as the sixth-best single season in Bulldog history. His offense averaged over 38 points per game in 1985 and he would later guide the Bulldogs to a 51-7 win over Bowling Green in the Cal Bowl at Bulldog Stadium.
Sweeney is one of six Bulldogs to have his number retired (he wore No. 9) and was a two-time Co-MVP of the Pacific Coast Athletic Association.
Fresno entrepreneur and philanthropist Darius Assemi was the top honoree of the night, president of Granville Homes, as he was honored with the Fresno State Alumni Association's Top Dog Distinguished Alumnus Award for 2013.
Both Sweeney and Assemi will be recognized during halftime at tomorrow's homecoming game versus UNLV along with the 13 other Outstanding Alumni Award recipients honored at tonight's event.
Top Dog Award recipients are chosen from each of the university's academic schools and colleges and from the Department of Athletics, the Henry Madden Library and the Divisions of Student Affairs and Graduate Studies.
